Uniform Reminder

Students wearing the St Michael’s uniform according to the guidelines set out in our Uniform Policy are a symbol of pride and of belonging to our school community. We understand that the Term 2 change to winter uniform, along with recent absences due to COVID-19 and online ordering may have caused some delays in families having accessed the full uniform for their children. Many uniform orders have been delivered recently and it is an expectation that all students arrive at school wearing their full correct uniform, including black school shoes for Years 1-6 on their non-sports days. Please also note that school hats are worn year round, so please make sure students have a clearly labelled hat that they wear at playtimes. We thank you for your ongoing cooperation with this. Home Reading Resources

Learning to read is a developmental process and requires a solid connection between the reader and the text to create meaning. Research tells us that, “the hallmarks of skilled reading are fast-word identification and rich context-dependent understanding of the text” (Winch et al, 2014). Catholic Education Western Australia, along with the Western Australian Curriculum supports a balanced approach to teaching Literacy. For more detail on CEWA’s position on Literacy please visit: https://visionforlearning.cewa.edu.au/resource/literacy-position-statement/ At St Michael’s we understand that balanced teaching programmes consist of graphophonic (letter-sound), grammatical (rules of words) and semantic (making meaning) understandings support children throughout their developmental acquisition of the reading skill. This balanced approach includes using:

• Literary and factual texts
• Print and digital texts
• Modelled, shared, guided and independent reading
• Letter level, word level, sentence level and text level learning
• Connecting new texts to ourselves, to our world and to other texts

Parents play a critical role in the initial development of children’s oracy and literacy (CEWA, 2019). In 2020, St Michael’s purchased two online instructional reading level programs for use by both emergent and fluent readers; the PM eCollection series (P-Y2/3) and Scholastic’s Literacy Pro Library (Y2/3-6). Teachers have sent home usernames and passwords to access these resources and matched texts to each student’s instructional level. If your child has not yet logged on to their online reading resource to continue their levelled reading at home in the absence of physical readers, please consult your child’s teacher.  

Year 6 Media Ministry

Hello Saint Michael’s. This week just a reminder that it is now fully back to normal and students need to start wearing their winter uniform as it is cold outside. Please wear your jumper when you are cold! This week is Reconciliation Week and Sorry Day was on Tuesday.

Uniform
Hi guys just a friendly reminder to please wear the correct uniform on the right days and if you don’t have it, you can buy your uniforms from the uniform shop. Always remember to wear the correct uniform on the right day. If you don’t have your winter uniform and are still awaiting the order from the uniform shop that’s OK. You will get it soon.

Reconciliation Week
This week from May 27th to June 3rd it is Reconciliation Week. The week symbolises when Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders were counted in the census on the 27th May 1967. We now have a society where aboriginals are accepted and acknowledged but, even still now, there is discrimination against indigenous people. We can stop that by not judging people by the colour of their skin or culture. This week was also Sorry Day when we remember when the Australian government took away Aboriginal children. In 2008 the government said sorry to all those Aboriginals and Torre strait Islanders families who lost their children.

Pentecost Sunday
This week is Pentecost Sunday. Pentecost Sunday is when the disciples where all in a room, a great fire appeared above them, and spirit and landed on each of their heads. Suddenly they could all speak in tongue and tell the word of God to everyone. Pentecost Sunday is when the Christians and Catholics celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit. Its celebrated on Sunday, 50 days after Easter. Classes have been learning more about the fruits of the Holy Spirit.
