NAIDOC Activities

This year, due to COVID-19, the National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) has had to postpone official NAIDOC celebrations which are typically held every July. In Week 10, St Michael’s students will still observe and participate in NAIDOC learning activities as part of the WA Curriculum’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Culture cross-curriculum priority. The Year 4-6 students will participate in Mass on Wednesday, July 1, however, to maintain social distancing requirements, we ask that parents do not attend this Mass until restrictions are lifted further. On Friday, July 3, each age cohort (K/PP, 1-3 and 4-6) will engage in shared activities prepared by the teachers about Noongar language, art and culture. This time will provide students with a wonderful opportunity to engage in hands-on educational activities designed to deepen and strengthen our commitment to learning about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and actively participate in reconciliation efforts.

P&F School Disco and Hot Dog Lunch

The P&F school disco, typically held after school in the Hall, will be slightly different in 2020. The Footsteps Dance Company has been engaged to host St Michael’s School Disco during school hours to avoid large gatherings of parents at this time. On Friday July 3, the last day of Term 3, students will be invited to come to school in NAIDOC coloured casual clothes that are suitable for dancing in and to enjoy themselves in the Hall led by the Footsteps DJ.

Students will attend the disco as scheduled;

Kindy and Pre-primary: 10:00am – 10:40am
Year 1, Year 2 and Year 3: 11:30am-12:30pm
Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6: 1:30pm-2:30pm

Mrs Linda Ford will also be making hot dogs in the canteen for all students for lunch. If you are able to help prepare the hot dogs in the canteen, please contact the school to let Mrs Ford know that you can assist.

Procedure Writing in Year 1

This week the Year 1 students have been busily working on writing procedures all about making an ooey, gooey, sticky, icky Wombat Stew. They have used a special bag of ingredients like sticks, gumnuts, mud and leaves to help inspire their ingredients list. Each student has thought about what equipment would need to be used to make such a stew and their next part of the writing process is to organise their method using sequential steps.

A wonderful effort by Mrs Marzo and the Year 1 writers!

Learning about the Holy Spirit in Pre-primary

The PP class have been learning about how the Holy Spirit works in our lives and is represented by the symbols of fire or a dove. Each child used paint and water to create an artistic background for their Holy Spirit dove made from tracing their hand. Beautiful work Miss G.C. and the PP learners!
