The Sacrament of Eucharist

The sacrament of first Eucharist in the past was often called ‘First Communion’. The word ‘communion’ means to be united with; Catholics believe that in Holy Communion we are united in a special way with Jesus Christ.

At his last supper, Jesus said of the bread that he shared among his followers, “Take and eat, this is my body.” When we receive the Eucharist, Catholics believe that in a mysterious way we are sharing in the body and blood of Christ. As we receive Christ’s Body and Blood, we also are nourished spiritually and brought closer to God.

Holy Communion and the whole celebration is also known as Eucharist, from a Greek word meaning thanksgiving.

First Eucharist is the third of the sacraments of the Catholic Church (after baptism and reconciliation) and is a sacrament of initiation into the Church. Pope Francis has called it the ‘sacrament of love’.

May your First Communion celebrate your friendship with Jesus.

As you grow in this friendship may your words be gentle and your touch be kind.

May you hear whispers of love in your heart each day.

May you have fun in discovering God hidden everywhere!

And, may you remember to thank God often for the gift of life.”
